We are looking for a part-time 3D Character Artist to join our creative team for an upcoming immersive VR project exploring nervousness and performance anxiety.
The main focus of the role will be the creation of characters combining human and animal features (including birds, squirrels, badgers, bears, and wolves) and developing them from concept art into production-ready assets for VR.
We are looking for someone with solid experience across the full 3D character pipeline, from modelling and rigging to facial blend shapes, texturing, and optimisation for standalone VR.
Who is behind the project
The project is being developed by an experienced creative team led by director and screenwriter Ondřej Nagy Moravec, whose work has long focused on immersive storytelling, virtual reality, and mixed reality.
His VR project Darkening premiered at the Venice Film Festival and became the first VR work ever nominated for a Czech Lion Award. Fresh Memories: The Look was presented at festivals including SXSW, Tribeca, and IDFA, while the mixed-reality project Fragile Home had its world premiere in Venice and later received the Cristal Award at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
Technical development and production will take place at Brainz Immersive Studio, under the production leadership of Helium Film.
What we are looking for
3D character modelling – ability to translate visual concepts and sketches into finished 3D characters.
Experience with game development – understanding of real-time pipelines, game engines, particularly Unity, and the creation of game-ready assets.
Model optimisation – ability to create optimised mid-poly characters suitable for standalone VR platforms such as Meta Quest.
Rigging – creation of functional skeletal rigs ready for animation.
Facial rigging and blend shapes – preparation of facial expressions and character performance.
Texturing and materials – full preparation of textures and materials in line with the project’s visual style and the technical requirements of VR.
We are looking for someone who can independently manage the full character creation pipeline while also collaborating closely with the visual and development teams.
Experience in 3D animated film production is also highly relevant, particularly in character modelling, rigging, and facial animation. However, experience with game environments and optimisation for real-time rendering remains important.
Work organisation and terms
Production period: December 2026 / January 2027 to October 2027. The final production schedule is currently being finalised.
Workload: approximately 50% part-time, with the possibility of increasing to up to 100% during more intensive phases of production.
Type of collaboration: freelance / contractor basis, invoiced according to the number of days worked.
Work planning: the specific schedule and availability will be agreed individually with the selected candidate.
Compensation: negotiable, depending on experience.
Selection process
Round 1 – Portfolio
Please send us your portfolio with examples of 3D character work.
We are interested not only in final renders, but also in the technical side of your work — wireframes, rigging, blend shapes, and examples of characters implemented in a game or real-time environment.
Round 2 – Practical assignment
Selected applicants will be invited to a second round.
You will receive concept art for one character and will be asked to develop it into a 3D model according to a specific technical and artistic brief. The practical assignment will be paid.
Based on the results of the assignment, we will select the candidate we would like to collaborate with.
